President Mam Jalal: Students as Pioneers of the People’s Collective Struggle

Throughout his six decades of political struggle and liberationist nationalist ideology, President Mam Jalal has consistently regarded students as the vanguard of the people’s collective struggle.

President Mam Jalal: “Throughout history, students have carried the torch of progressive thought and have guided the people’s collective struggle.”

President Mam Jalal, over his sixty-year journey in political activism and liberationist nationalist ideology, has always viewed students as the vanguard of the people’s movement. From a remarkably young age—during his primary, secondary, and university education—he himself played a prominent role as a Kurdish student advocating nationalist ideology. He contributed significantly to spreading awareness and motivating fellow students to fight for the Kurdish people’s right to self-determination.

At just fourteen years old, President Mam Jalal collaborated with a teacher to initiate efforts toward developing a reading culture among students and was elected as the leader of this initiative. The mission of the group was to encourage students to pursue extracurricular reading. Beyond his efforts to elevate and globalize the Kurdish cause—including participation in international youth and student forums—President Mam Jalal played a pivotal role in founding the Kurdistan Student Association in 1976, under the guidance of the New Revolution Movement. This association profoundly impacted raising awareness and directing students during both the mountain-based (rural guerrilla) and urban phases of the Kurdish struggle.

Here, President Mam Jalal’s foresight into the role and position of students in political and social struggles to achieve the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people becomes evident. Students have consistently formed a critical part of his work and projects, whether during his tenure as Secretary-General of the Kurdistan National Union or as the first elected President of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq’s political history.
