Three Kurdish students are leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to combat deforestation and monitor desertification.
A team of Biomedical Engineering students from Qaiwan International University developed an advanced system for forest conservation, earning second place in Huawei’s annual Middle East competition.
The students—Aland Muhammad and Zanyar Dana—created an AI-powered system that integrates smart sensors, satellite imagery, and specialized cameras to detect smoke and heat anomalies. The system operates using wind and rainwater energy to function autonomously and suppress fires.
Selected among 250 participating teams in the region, they were the only Iraqi representatives among 17 national teams to reach the competition’s final stage in Saudi Arabia.
